To celebrate this most patriotic of days, I give you Byron MacGregor’s “Americans.” This is the work of a bored Canadian radio news anchor in 1974, who read this nagging, strident, and occasionally wildly ill-informed pro-America rant over an instrumental version of “America The Beautiful,” and somehow found himself with a number one single. I suppose we should all count our blessings that at least the people of Fox News and conservative talk radio aren’t scoring chart hits with hyper-jingoistic spoken-word harangues today.
