1980 Survey Mix

1980coverB

This is the final installment in my series of 1980s survey mixes, which have been anthologizing each year of that decade in reverse order. These compilations are designed to give context to the music of this era, and give a sense of how various musical niches and trends overlapped or coexisted in their cultural moment.

Early on in the process of doing this project I made preliminary playlists of each year so I knew the general shape of things in advance. So I knew from more or less the start that 1980 was going to be one of the best years in the series, and maybe the best of any decade series I could make. The sheer number of enduring classics in 1980 is staggering – I think the only year in the ‘80s as ridiculously fertile as this is 1987. There’s a lot of different trends coming to a head at once – new wave/post-punk, metal, disco, prog, country pop, early hip-hop – and you can get a sense just by listening to this that almost everyone represented here was feeling inspired, enthusiastic, and ambitious. Everything just sounds so vital and electric, and in a lot of cases, the music doesn’t sound dated at all.

You can find all of the other 1980s surveys on this page. I have updated most of the surveys to include some key songs and artists that I accidentally missed the first time around. Thanks to Chris Conroy, Sean T. Collins, Chris Ott, Rob Sheffield, and especially Paul Cox for their help in compiling these mixes. I don’t think this project would’ve worked without Paul, so please send him a shout out if you can.

I absolutely loved the 80s lists! Lots of interesting new songs to discover (and to re-discover). Do you have plans to do any other decade lists? I am particularly interested in a 70s Survey Mix.

  2. Sebastian says:

Really great work. Very enjoyable and educational. I’d love to see a similar effort for the seventies.

  3. Matthew says:

I will indeed be doing the 1970s! I’m going to take a break for a while first though. I might do it starting in early 2017.

  4. Danny says:

Love all the mixes you put together Matthew and the way you curate them. Any plans for a nineties mix? Having followed your blog for some time I know acts from that decade were a lot of your inspiration comes from. I’d be fascinated to see how you distilled that into a series like this. I’m assuming at least one full disk would be REM? 😉

  5. ted says:

Oh noes!!! You updated some of the discs? For those of us who have d/ld all of these, do you have a short guide to which discs to reload?

1980 indeed was a powerhouse year, though ’82 is up there too. Also: Because it took so long for the US to catch on to the second British invasion, associated years are different for where you’re from (if you grew up in the era). Madness “Our House” is ’82 for their British fans, but 1983 for when they broke thru in the US.

  6. Kevin says:

Thanks for putting these together–I’ve loved reliving the 80’s through your ears, and can’t wait for the 70’s collection. I, too, would like a note about which discs to redownload for the updated tracklist (when you have time).

  7. Matthew says:

Oh man, I didn’t really keep track of exactly which ones were updated since that was a pretty gradual process going on in the background over a few months, but I can tell you that if a disc now has Miles Davis or Jandek on it, that is an updated disc. 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1987 were all updated for sure. No more than two discs of any set were changed.

Ted — I did take into account “impact” of songs that hit in different years. The rules for that sort of thing were arbitrary, and I mostly favored when things became popular in the United States.

Danny — I will eventually do the ’90s, but it will come after the ’70s because the ’90s are less interesting to me as I experienced all of that in real time as a teenager. That’s a story I already know very well.

  8. Caleb says:

Big thanks for this amazing project.

Here’s my imprecise take on the updated songs. If anyone wants to double-check, I’d definitely appreciate it.

    1981 D5
4: August Darnell, Christmas on Riverside Drive
    20: Jandek, Feathered Drums
(maybe some other songs after #4, since I just grabbed everything from #4 onward)

    1981 D7
16: Patti Austin, Symphony of Love

    1982 D1
20: Klaus Nomi, After the Fall

    1983 D1
12: Donna Summer, She Works Hard…

    1983 D2
9: John Cafferty…, On the Dark Side

    1983 D3
    6: Miles Davis, U’N’I
    (maybe more after #6)

    1983 D4
    16: Steps Ahead, Pools
    20: Holger Czukay…, Snake Charmer
21: Jandek, If Your Fortune Fails You
(maybe some other songs, since I grabbed everything from #16 onward)

    1984 D7
    5: Wynton Marsalis, Lazy Afternoon
    6: Miles Davis, Code M.D.
    7: Jandek, Ha Ha

    1985 D2
13: Village People, Sex Over the Phone

    1985 D5
    16: Miles Davis, Human Nature

    1987 D4
    18: Jandek, I Passed By…
    19: Holger Czukay, Blessed Easter

    1988 D7
    21: The Beaches Boys, Kokomo

Speaking of year surveys, I’d love to see the 2012 survey posted again. But that’s a whole ‘nother topic.

  9. caleb says:

    Ted –
Looking through the lists, these seem to be the discs that have been updated:
    1987: Disc 4 and Disc 6
    1986: Disc 7
    1985: Disc 2 and Disc 5
    1984: Disc 7
    1983: Disc 1 and Disc 4
    1982: Disc 3
    1981: Disc 5

I could have missed something! But I think I downloaded each of the mixes more-or-less when they were released, so I assume my copies were all version 1.0

  10. Luis says:

So good to know you plan on doing the 70’s and 90’s!

The inclusion of Jandek confused me a bit, the creiteria is influence and popularity, or just the fact that you like a particular song and consider it representative of the year?

Thank you so much for this, albums seem to be the only thing that generaly survives as a representation of a decade, there must be countless one hit wonder acts that were great and only had one chance to do one single, I imagine the 60’s must have dozens of cases like this specially.

I for one think its dificult to find out about music that maybe was in the charts, but its not from someone who is very well known.

  11. festus800 says:

These surveys are incredible. Thank you. I agree 1980 in particular is amazing, so fresh. Hard to believe all this came out the same year.

  12. Bill Cosby says:

    Wow. Durutti Column invented Vaporwave

  13. Matthew says:

“The inclusion of Jandek confused me a bit, the creiteria is influence and popularity, or just the fact that you like a particular song and consider it representative of the year?”

The criteria is, for the most part, EXISTING at the time. Jandek was almost completely unknown through the 80s, but it’s important to, in retrospect, note that this odd loner was off doing this thing unlike anything else off to the side of all this other stuff. I don’t include EVERYTHING like this, but I think of Jandek as being a significant artist. (Watch out for 1978 — his first record comes out then, and includes the scariest song I have ever heard in my life.)
