1970s Survey Mixes
This is the Fluxblog 1970s survey, a collection of 10 extended playlists designed to provide a panoramic view of the music of each year of the decade as possible across all major genres and, as much as possible, around the world. Each playlist is available on both Spotify and Apple Music.
Artists are represented by one song each except in some special cases in which a major artist released more than one significant album in a year and tracks from both records are included. Some songs could slot into multiple years given when it was released and/or promoted, and while I had no hard and fast rule with this, I tended to favor the year a song had its greatest commercial impact. Also, given the limitations of streaming catalogs, there are some songs I would have liked to include that were not available – given that these playlists can be revised, I will update them as necessary if, say, Funkadelic’s “(Not Just) Knee Deep,” Starland Vocal Band’s “Afternoon Delight,” or all the late ’70s “city pop” from Japan I wanted to include turns up on the services.
The sequencing of playlists is not meant to be taken as some sort of hierarchal ranking, though I do tend to put historically important and/or personal favorites towards the top of the sequence. The goal is mainly for this to be as listenable as possible and to allow the listener to get a full sense of historical context. Artwork for each of the mixes was taken from back issues of After Dark. The images were from the year represented, or very close to it.
If you like this survey set and appreciate the months of work that went into making it, you can donate some money via Ko-Fi. If you know other people who would enjoy and/or learn a lot from this set, please pass it along! If you like this set, I also have surveys for the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
